Surabaya – Top Sites to Visit

The city of Surabaya is famous for many historical reasons, including its considerable strategic importance in the development of Indonesia’s independence. As such, many of the sites and attractions in the city are of great historical significance and popular amongst tourists and locals alike. The city is also famous for its various after hours activities, including nightlife and its late-night markets. Grahadi Building

A building of Dutch descent, the Grahadi building is the official residence of the East Java Governor. Originally built in 1795, it is located opposite to the city’s famous Heroes Monument. It includes two floors in a Romanesque-styled building that covers a space of more than 76,000 square meters. The modern Governor’s office was completed in 1931, with the building being a venue for various historical negotiations over the years. In addition to being an official state residence, the Grahadi building is also utilized to house incoming guests as well as hold various state receptions and other important government meetings.

G-Walk

Located in western Surabaya, G-Walk is a road that spans nearly 2 kilometers and includes various restaurants and other forms of entertainment. The various restaurants contain local and international specialties, as well as food trucks and a food court. The location holds special events every Friday night, including live jazz sessions where local musicians perform. The venue includes various nightlife options, including shops and various bazaars, and is popular amongst tourists. the complex is set amongst a natural green backdrop – an oasis compared to the large indoor shopping malls found in the city.

Surabaya Zoo

Opened in 1919, the Surabaya Zoo covers an area of 15 hectares. Referred to locally as “Bonbin”, the zoo includes an exciting line-up of animals from elephants to zebras, bears, lions, sharks and more. A unique aspect of the zoo is its breeding facility that includes 29 aviaries that originally housed 16 endangered birds that are found only in Indonesia. The success of the program has seen more than 40 unique endangered birds re-released into the wild. Another key attraction is the zoo’s large Komodo dragon exhibit, featuring more than 70 specimens.
