Jakarta is a massive city overflowing with historical landmarks and architecture dating back to its colonial days. One of the most famous landmarks is that of Monas Tower. Also referred to as the National Monument, it resides in Mardeka, so aptly named to honour Jakarta’s independence The tower is 137 meters tall and includes an observation deck where visitors can enjoy open and unobstructed views of the Jakarta skyline. Below the structure is a basement that includes various dioramas that showcase the rich history of Indonesia. The tower is the best-known landmark in the city of Jakarta.
Another striking architectural feature is the A.A. Maramis Building, also known as the Paleis van Daendels. Nicknamed the “White House”, the original intention of the building was to house the Governor General of the Dutch East Indies. It is one of the oldest surviving buildings in central Jakarta, with construction having started in 1809. It is also the largest private residence ever built within the city. Built in an Indies Empire architectural style, visitors can note many elements of popular French architecture of that time period, with adjustments made to fit Indonesia’s tropical climate.
Much of Indonesia’s original colonial architecture can be seen in Kota Tua Jakarta, also referred to as the Jakarta “Old Town”. The neighborhood includes the original downtown area of Jakarta and was often referred to as “Old Batavia”. The area is full of Dutch-style architecture, mostly dated from the 17th century. The neighborhood covers approximately 1.3 square kilometers and includes the area of Glodok which is predominately Chinese in ethnicity. The government of Jakarta has taken many steps to revitalize and preserve the historical area, which is popular amongst tourists for its timeless style and cheerful street stalls.
