Surabaya is a busy Indonesian sea port whose architecture is unchanged since the days of Dutch colonialism. Much of the city’s top architecture and landmarks are the only evidence left behind by Dutch, Chinese and Middle Eastern influences. The city also includes historical landmarks related to its infrastructure, such as the famous Red Bridge. Located in North Surabaya, the bridge marks one of the most important conflicts within the Battle of Surabaya.
Another unique cultural landmark is that of the Kong Co Kong Tik Cun Ong Temple. The Buddhist complex includes influences from Confucianism and Taoism and is adorned with various dragons and latticed teak altars. Visitors will often be side-by-side with various pilgrims who tend to the temple, lighting candles and burning incense. The area directly surrounding the temple includes many street food vendors serving Javanese fare.
One of the city’s historic buildings includes that of the PTPN XI Surabaya Building (formally Gedung PTPN XXII). Originally developed in the 1920s, it was built in a style of Dutch Colonial architecture and inaugurated in 1925. The building has had several uses, including a storage facility for the Japanese Army in 1945. In 1957, the building became property of the government upon nationalization of all assets owned by the Dutch East Indies Company. The building is currently occupied by the State Plantation Company (PTPN).
