Central Market Medan

Once centered in Medan’s Chinatown, the market has a colorful history of hosting illegal gambling and other underground activities. Today’s market is a  buzzing shopping center loaded with clothes, cooking materials, household goods, electronics and more. Attractive wholesale prices give vendors a never-ending supply of customers.  Built in 1937, the art deco clock tower is a meeting point on crowded market days.

Maimun Palace

Considered one of the most famous landmarks in Medan, the Maimun Palace began its life serving royalty: the Sultanate of Deli. Built between 1887 and 1891, the palace was designed by Dutch architect, Theodoor van Erp, and includes an area of 2,772 square meters and 30 separate rooms. The interior design of the palace was shaped by Malaysian, Islamic and Indian cultures, as well as furnishings from Spain and Italy. The Melayu palace, now a public-facing museum,  is the last of its kind in Indonesia.

Tjong A Fie Mansion

Locally known as one of the most important historical jewels in Medan, the Tjong A Fie Mansion was built in 1895 and includes 35 rooms across two stories. It covers more than 8,000 square meters and is a registered cultural landmark. The mansion honors feng shui values and is influenced by Chinese, Malay and art deco styles. Visitors can browse the on-site museum’s various exhibits  or feel the sun’s warmth in an open-air courtyard. Built by businessman, Tjong A Fie, who left China to seek a better life in the Dutch East Indies.
