Medan – Parks & Gardens

Being one of the largest cities in Indonesia,  green space is a rare find in Medan. Where available in central, it is well used by locals and offers a sought-after retreat to the rising concrete jungle. Medan is well-known by adventurers who travel several hours beyond its outskirts for the breath-taking waterfalls, jungles and lakes —to name a few favorites.

Taman Ahmad Yani Medan

Located conveniently in Medan’s city center, Taman Ahmad Yani Medan is an urban park lit by palm-tree-lined paths transporting its wanderers to far-off jungles. Park visitors can work up a sweat on free outdoor gym equipment and keep the little ones happy at a children’s playground. The park’s flat greenery is popular as a running track and an outdoor yoga spot for all to enjoy.

The Le Hu Garden

Located outside of Medan’s city center, this private park attracts many visitors throughout the year. Initially run by the Hu family, it has been expanded to include on-site attractions such as lakes and lily-strewn ponds as well as a children’s playground area. Visitors can pay a small fee to feed the pond fish, such as tilapia and goldfish. Paths spaghetti around Indonesia’s opalescent flora and fauna, as much as the occasional butterfly. A small restaurant, surrounded by parakeet-green gardens, serves an excellent viewpoint with a meal.

Tinggi Raja White Crater

A drawn-out journey from Medan, the Tinggi Raja White Crater is not to be missed. Visitors will require a three-to-four-hour drive that will lead them to a powder-white, limestone crater swaddled in a tropical forest. Visitors will be blown away by the sulphur-blue water, with lighter or darker shades dependent on the time of year. Although the park itself covers 176 hectares, it is relatively unchartered by foreign tourists due to its remote location. The location includes several hot springs that casually hit temperatures of up to 90 degrees Celsius.
