While Jakarta is often considered a concrete jungle by many, the city offers bags of choice when it comes to green space. Many of the city’s parks include designs from its Dutch colonial period, with architecture, structures and various landmarks calling back to the Dutch era. In addition to wide open spaces, many of Jakarta’s parks are located in and centered around various historical monuments and attractions, meaning visitors can enjoy not only outdoor space but a cultural experience, too!
Taman Suropati
Also referred to as Suropati Park, it is in the center of Menteng in Jakarta. An iconic place to meet, it was originally designed in 1920 by a local Dutch architect. The park is considered a symbol of peace and friendship, with various monuments by artists from the six ASEAN countries of 1984 located within it. Active locals weave between succulent-green trees and neon-blue fountains – no wonder it is a firm favorite active locals. During select weekends and festival periods, the park hums with food stalls and musical performances which can be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike.
