The city of Jakarta is the center of activity and festivities around both Indonesian and international cultural events. The Java Jazz Festival and Jakarta International Film Festival are a handful of its most famous events that unite local and world-famous artists. Visitors can also indulge in Jakarnaval which celebrates the cultural merits of Indonesia in a fluorescent, day-long parade.
Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival
Considered one of the largest jazz festivals in the world, it is also named the largest in the Southern Hemisphere. A yearly event in Jakarta, it is known locally as “Java Jazz” and was first staged in 2005. Held early in March each year, the show regularly includes more than 1,000 jazz artists that perform more than 100 unique shows throughout the event. Nearly 50,000 attendees flock to Jakarta for the three-day festival. Each year sees a unique theme to the show, with the first having been “Bringing the World to Indonesia”. Jazz performers attend from across the globe to participate in this iconic event.

Jakarta International Film Festival
The Jakarta International Film Festival (known locally as “JiFFest”) was founded in 1999 and is routinely held every December in Jakarta. Screening both local Indonesian and international films, the festival has hosted the Indonesian Feature Film competition that includes foreign film professionals acting as judges. Each year sees a unique theme placed on the event, with the most recent being that of “Culinary Cinema”. More than 50,000 spectators attend the event which is held over a multi-day period. While counts vary, the festival usually includes the screening of no less than 200 films across various venues throughout the city of Jakarta.

Jakarnaval
An annual celebration of local culture, Jakarnaval is held June each year in Jakarta. The event is a mix of celebrations observing the anniversary of Jakarta. Centered around cultural experience, the events include the Jakarta Fair, Jakarta Night Festival and the Kota Tua Creative Festival, amongst others. Much of the festival takes place near or around Merdeka Square and is wildly popular with local and tourists. The events usually begin with a large parade that includes many locally themed floats. In a showcase of international solidarity, many local embassies also participate in showcasing their own cultures.
