Crowned the ‘Paris of Java”, Bandung’s architecture paints an Indo-European story. Many of the city’s buildings that cropped up in the 18th and 19th century were designed in a Dutch Colonial style, while the 20th century saw the introduction of art deco. Younger development works have seen construction in a modern style, but Bandung strives to preserve and protect older structures as part of its cultural heritage.
The Bandung Institute of Technology was the first technology-focused school in Indonesia. Established in 1920, the school’s building and architecture was built with backing of the Dutch colonial administration. The original school building design is unique in that, while using Dutch styles, it was clearly blended with Indonesian architecture and modern elements of the time.
Gedung Kologdam is a historic building developed in the 1920s. It was the main location for an annual trade fair during this period, while today it houses a military complex for education and training. It was designed by the Dutch architect, Wolff Schoemaker, in New Indies style likely influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright. The nearby Gedung Sate is another popular Bandung landmark. Built in 1920, the building serves as a public space that was previously the seat of the Dutch East Indies department of State-Owned Enterprises. It currently houses a museum and serves as the seat of the governor of the province of West Java. The neoclassical building draws on architectural elements from the New Indies, Dutch Rationalism and Hindu styles.
