Bali – Architecture & Landmarks

Bali is famous for its many unique landmarks, many dedicated to predominant Hindu gods and legends. The island also boasts architectural feats, including those inspired by colonial and religious roots. The Ubud Palace (officially referred to as Puri Saren Agung) is a historical building that previously acted as the official residence of the royal family of Ubud. A major attraction for visitors, the palace was built in the 1800s and regularly holds cultural events on its grounds. Admission is free for visitors.

The Bajra Sandhi Monument is a famous landmark dedicated to the struggles of the Balinese people. Built in 1987, it was inaugurated in 2003 and is in front of the Governor’s Office in Denpasar. The monument consists of three parts, including its main building,  and an inner and outer courtyard. Visitors can explore various exhibition halls, a library and several dioramas that showcase the history of Bali and its people.

The Besakih Temple is the largest and most famous temple in Bali. It is often referred to as the “Mother Temple” and is actually made up of 20 individual temple sites across six terrace levels. Constructed more than 1,000 years ago, the site is very important to the Balinese and is home to more than 70 religious ceremonies performed each year. Ornate carvings and statues punctuate the temple grounds under the blue shade of Mount Agung. It is no surprise that visitors travel across continents to witness its immortal beauty. Tourists are well received, with guided tours available for visitors in multiple languages.
